Midnight Music. 126.

Midnight Music is a daily post of a song that happens at midnight. It couldn’t be simpler. Today’s song is:

So, can we please take a moment to acknowledge something. 32 years ago today, A-Ha released Take On Me. It’s a pretty decent song. I’d consider it a staple of any 80s collection, and they’re one of the best known 80s bands. What I’d like to acknowledge is the fact that the video for it is still one of the finest promos ever produced. It’s incredible. Even now, looking at it, it still looks stupidly good. The quality of the animation is first rate.

Now, clever people may be thinking, 32 years ago? But it came out in 1985! Whilst you’re correct, the original version of it came out in 1984. It was re-released and edited, not once, but twice before it became the song we now know. We wouldn’t have the 85 version without the 84 one though, so I’m marking that date. And yes, above where I said clever, I meant nerdy pedants. I’ve put the original 84 version down below as well. The video for that, by contrast, is pretty shit, and it’s not hard to see why it didn’t chart the first time round.

So needless to say
I’m odds and ends
I’ll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is OK
Say after me
It’s no better to be safe than sorry
