2004. Innit. Lots of debut albums this year. We got Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, and other stuff. Solo artists a bit thin on the ground. Well, dudes especially. I think it’s becoming a thing that I don’t do any research for my posts. Have I spelt becoming right. It doesn’t look right. Now I’ve looked at it for too long. It may as well say anus-eggs. Right, 2004. What do I remember happening. Erm. Jesus. Erm, oh, the guy dressed as Batman broke into Buckingham Palace. The Fathers for Justice thing. Because fathers want justice. Just not from breaking and entering.
Singles!
TALK GENERALLY ABOUT SONGS! < This is what it says in the template I drew up to do these. I'm purposefully not going to talk generally about songs now.
Male Solo Single of the year.
Nominated:
Blinded By The Lights by The Streets
Ordinary People by John Legend
Confessions Part II by Usher
Irish Blood, English Heart by Morrissey
And The Winner Is…
Well Morrissey isn’t having it! Muahahah. What a fat, over the hill, cunty waste of space. If you hate this country so much, why don’t you fuck off. Blinded By The Lights is a staple of my music listening. It’s well written, has an amazing beat to it and that beautiful hook. Great tune.
Female Solo Single of the year.
Nominated:
Us by Regina Spektor
The Special Two by Missy Higgins
Katie by Missy Higgins
Black Horse And The Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall
Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall
And The Winner Is…
Had to be. Regina is one of my all time faves. I have more music by her than anyone else! Dropping interesting facts all over the place, aren’t I! Also, side note, I love her mouth. Like. A lot. I don’t know why.
Band/Group Single of the year.
Nominated:
Club Foot by Kasabian
Dirty Dancehall by The Zutons
Roses by Outkast
Mr Brightside by The Killers
Harder To Breathe by Maroon 5
Everybody’s Changing by Keane
Naked As We Came by Iron & Wine
Sweets by M. Craft
And The Winner Is…
Surprised? You shouldn’t be. If you were, you really need to try harder reading my blog! From it’s opening piano riff, through it’s vocal delivery, it’s shoehorned in lyrics, it’s sense of humour, it’s almost classical hip hop stylings, it’s almost the perfect song. I originally posted the proper video, which is great, but it takes the swearwords out it, which ruins the flow. It’s a song that deserves to be heard properly.
Song of the year.
Another song from my list of all time faves. M. Craft’s story is one worth reading about. Dragonfly shot up my fave song list the moment I heard it. It’s sublime. The riff, the subtle hiss, the delivery of the vocals, the lyrics. It’s increcle. I mean incredible.
Male Solo Album of the year.
Nominated:
You Are The Quarry by Wondercunt Morrissey
Confessions by Usher
Whatever John Legends album was called by John Legend
A Grand Don’t Come For Free by The Streets.
And The Winner Is…
I may have forgotten what John Legend’s album was called. I’m having a real problem with my memory right now. 9 gins has that effect. I tied the Leg End with The Streets for this. Both albums are great but for different reasons. The Streets’ A Grand Don’t Come For Free is an amazing well structured story over the entire musical landscape and John Legend’s album, whatever the fuck he called it, is incredibly simple yet very well layered.
Female Solo Album of the year.
Nominated:
Hidden Vagenda by Kimya Dawson
Auf Der Maur by Melissa Auf Der Maur
Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor
The Sound Of White by Missy Higgins
Eye To The Telescope by KT Tunstall
And The Winner Is…
Australian Missy Higgins. I know you don’t know who she is, that’s why I included her nationality so that you could rationalise your amazing oversight. The album is beautiful. You won’t agree, but fuck you and your utter bullshit. 🙂 Special shoutout to Kimya Dawson for being GET LIFTED! THAT’S WHAT HIS ALBUM IS CALLED! Erm, shout out to Kimya Dawson for being a fucking legend.
Band/Group Album of the year.
Nominated:
Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters
Probot by Probot
Kasabian by Kasabian
*falls asleep from the sheer excitement of these album titles*
Hot Fuss by The Killers
American Idiot by Green Day
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge by My Chemical Romance
Our Endless Numbered Days by Iron & Wine
And The Winner Is…
Iron & Wine produce some of the most beautiful music ever created. This album is just beautiful from start to finish. Done! Fuck you, 2004!
