1994

1994! What a cunt! I’ve been driven to the edge by trying to do this year. It seems like all the good songs, ever were released. In worldly events… erm, you know I have no idea. I’m pretty sure this is when Clinton got hammered with Boris Yeltsin and then gave a press conference…

Oh, and Friends started, Ayrton Senna died, and Kim Il Sung died, but being a North Korean he just carried on being Supreme Leader!

Singles!

You may notice that in the writing bits I lack the energy, and that’s because 1994 is a bastard cunting mother fucker. Songs came out, leave me alone.

Male Solo Single of the year.

Nominated:

Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen
Circle of Life by Elton John
Rock My Heart by Haddaway
Loser by Beck
Most Beautiful Girl In The World by Prince
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Regulate by Warren G

And The Winner Is…

This was tough to ignore Prince, Jeff Buckley and Warren G. If people aren’t familiar with my love of Warren G’s Regulate, you should go find my lyrical breakdown of it. In fact, I don’t think that had it’s own post, I think it was in the middle of a playlist post or something. Tell you what, I’ll dig that out and make it it’s own post at some point. Haddaway was more or less in there for a joke. Streets of Philadelphia has long been one of my fave ever songs, and one of my fave ever music videos. It’s recorded live to camera and makes for a great performance. If you’ve never seen Philadelphia, I suggest you watch it.

Female Solo Single of the year.

Nominated:

All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Crow
I’ll Remember by Madonna
Secret by Madonna
Patience Of Angels by Eddi Reader
Stay by Lisa Loeb
Confide In Me by Kylie Minogue
Take A Bow by Madonna
Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos

And The Winner Is…

Another tough one. Madonna was fucking rampant this year, and then Lisa Loeb and Tori Amos bring out total classics. For me though, I had to go with Kylie. Confide In Me was a landmark moment for her, a total departure from anything she’d done before. The rest of the songs on that list are more of the same for those artists.

Band/Group Single of the year.

Right, here is where the problem of 1994 kicked up it’s head first. There are SO FUCKING MANY songs that came out this year or were on albums that were released this year. This is going to be a fairly long list of nominations and I’ve no idea how I’m going to pick a winner!

Nominated:

Live Forever by Oasis
Always by Erasure
Inside by Stiltskin
Whatta Man by Salt N Pepa and En Vogue
Zombie by The Cranberries
Creep by TLC
Sumthin’ Wicked This Way Comes by TLC
Buddy Holly by Weezer
Say It Ain’t So by Weezer
My Name Is Jonas by Weezer
To The End by Blur
End Of The Century by Blur
I’ll Stand By You by Pretenders
Fade Into You by Mazzy Star
7 Seconds by Neneh Cherry and Youssou N’Dour
Voodoo People by The Prodigy
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
When I Come Around by Green Day
Longview by Green Day
She by Green Day
Always by Bon Jovi
Violet by Hole
Doll Parts by Hole
Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Staying Out For The Summer by Dodgy
Shine by Collective Soul

And The Winner Is…

See the problem! Right, fuck it, we’re having 2.

There we go! I’m DONE, KILL ME NOW! (This was the last bit of this page I did, I didn’t write it in order)

Song of the year.

So, song of the year. When 1994 was suggested as a year to do, my brain went straight to one song. I left it out of the group/band single list as I knew that it’d be my best overall song. Before we get to it though, here is something else that would have been considered if I hadn’t instantly known!

Jeff Buckley’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is one of the finest covers of all time. Beautiful from start to finish. It would have won best male solo single if I didn’t love Streets of Philadelphia so much. It’s one of a very small list of songs that can easily make me cry. I think it’ll be around forever. Now, I guess, onto the song of the year…

And The Winner Is…

*yawn* It’s my fave ever song, what the fuck else was it going to be!

Albums!

Albums came out this year, sure. That’s all I can write at this point. This year has completely fucking exhausted. *edit* Looking back at this now, apparently I was too exhausted to even write the word “me”.

Male Solo Album of the year.

Nominated:

Grace by Jeff Buckley
Mellow Gold by Beck

And The Winner Is…

I didn’t even bother nominating much stuff as it was always going to be Jeff Buckley’s Grace. His one and only album, we were robbed of him far too soon. He had the potential to be a legend.

Female Solo Album of the year.

Nominated:

Bedtime Stories by Madonna
Under The Pink by Tori Amos
Eddi Reader by Eddi Reader
Kylie Minogue by Kylie Minogue

And The Winner Is…

This was pretty tough actually. I’d mostly been swaying between Madonna and Eddi Reader, then I’d ditched them both and was thinking Kylie, then I went back to Madonna. Then, I thought about what I’d listened to the most at the time, and it was Under The Pink! So, that’s our winner! All four of those are great albums though.

Band/Group Album of the year.

Nominated:

Dookie by Green Day
Weezer by Weezer
Parklife by Blur
Definitely Maybe by Oasis
Superunknown by Soundgarden
Live Through This by Hole
Dummy by Portishead
CrazySexyCool by TLC
Music For The Jilted Generation by The Prodigy
The Holy Bible by The Manic Street Preachers

And The Winner Is…

Well, about that. It’s a 4 way tie. I couldn’t decide. For ages. Initially I made my mind up right away. Dookie. It’s the album of my youth. But then I remember that I listened to CrazySexyCool so much that I had to buy a new tape. Then I got the CD, then the vinyl. I currently have 4 copies of that album. :/ And then, whilst you remember Weezer’s Weezer being good, you look back at it and realise that it’s kinda perfect. SOOOOOO many good songs on it. Oasis is crossed out because FUCK OASIS THAT’S WHY! Then you’ve got Parklife, being all groundbreaking and shit. Parklife was when people started to realise that, whilst Oasis were churning out sterile pop with a whiff of Beatles nostalgia, it was actually Damon Albarn who was our modern day Lennon. If I was stuck somewhere with only these four albums, I’d never get bored. I’m going to make Dookie the overall winner though, because FUCK OASIS! that’s the one I’ve listened to and loved the most overall!

Thanks! Fuck off!
