40:
Olly Murs – Dear Darlin’. (134 Plays, New Entry)
Not even started writing about the first song in the chart yet and I’m already pissed off because my keyboard doesn’t fucking work. This year’s chart may seem slightly more bitter than usual, ha! So, Olly Murs is kicking us off this year, apparently. A decent 134 plays. When I first heard the song, I didn’t like it. Not for any special reason, I just didn’t connect with it at all. Then, in 2014, on The Voice, Sally Barker sang a version of it that completely changed my opinion on it. Suddenly it made sense to me. I’ve put her version below as well as it’s excellent. She has an amazing voice.
39:
Charlie Puth – Marvin Gaye. (149 Plays, New Entry)
You know what, I’m not going to explain. Make of this what you will. The only think I will say is that whilst I like the song, I fucking hate the video. (With the obvious exception of anytime Meghan is on screen).
38:
Wolf Alice – Silk. (203 Plays, Down 35 places since last year.)
Last year’s number 3. Still think it’s one of the best songs I’ve heard in forever. It still blows me away lyrically. It might be one of the most perfect songs I’ve ever listened to. Ellie Roswell’s multilayered backing vocals, behind her main vocals are crazily good, also. In case you can’t work it out, I fucking love this song.
37:
Billy Idol – Eyes Without A Face. (208 Plays, Down 30 places since last year.)
Fucking hell. I genuinely don’t realise that I listen to this so much. I think this is the third year it’s been in the chart. I do love it, obviously, and I think I’ll always listen to it. It just surprises me how much.
36:
George Michael – Careless Whisper. (227 Plays, Down 4 places since last year.)
Obvs. Had to be in here somewhere. Dropped a mere 4 places from last year though, so it’s still holding on strong. This isn’t the only time we’ll here from George in this years chart though! Keep your ears peeled!
35:
James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover. (228 Plays, New Entry)
I think this largely stems from when I wrote about James a couple of months ago or whenever it was. I have been listening to this a lot the last few weeks but it is something I’d normally listen to a bit anyway, as I do genuinely like it. Fuck you, haters!
34:
Sia – Chandelier. (231 Plays, Re-Entry!)
A RE-ENTRY! If memory serves, Chandelier was number 1 in 2015, and then, last year for the 2016 chart, she dropped just outside the top 40 to about number 44 or something. It’s back though!
33:
Atomic Kitten – Whole Again. (245 Plays, New Entry)
This is entirely the fault of Spotify and I refuse to accept responsibility for it. They give you like a daily playlist for a few genres. The one I largely go to is the pop one, and for some reason Spotify insists on putting this in for me. Sometimes several times in the same fucking playlist. I don’t know if it’s a glitch or what.
32:
Birdy – People Help The People. (286 Plays, New Entry)
I think my love of Birdy is well known. She’s got 5 songs just outside the top 40 this year but only 2 in it. Her other is in the top 10. This one however is actually a brand new entry as it didn’t break into the top 40 last year.
31:
Weezer – Say It Ain’t So. (291 Plays, Down 1 place since last year.)
To me this is still one of the coolest songs ever. Weezer are just so fucking effortless. I think I love them for their simplicity of just being themselves. It’s not showy at all. It’s just them having fun and kicking ass.
Credit to M Thorpe for the photo that I stole off Google. It’s incredible!
